CONCLAVE (2024)

.. ..

this was pretty good actually! bit out of the usual for me - this is a political thriller about the election of a new pope, and the internal conflicts between candidates that come with such a position of power. i was idly enjoying it in the background up until the climax and that did manage to really surprise me. very good ending. it's also very pretty on a cinematography level; i visited the vatican in 2017 on a europe trip and was immediately struck by how pristine and gorgeous everything was, so i really quite appreciated it being hilighted in this film.

HERETIC (2024)

.. ..

I am usually an a24 girly and I do like most of their movies that I watch, but I’ll admit - I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to this one. religion based horror feels like a cop out to me, it’s so easy to make a demon and call it a day, yknow? it feels cheap. however, it’s a24, so I thought I’d give it a shot since I saw it on my streaming site. I actually really quite liked the setup of the first half, despite my reservations going into it and seeing ‘weird old man locks two young missionaries in his house’. predictable as hell, I thought. but no, once the premise was fleshed out, I was very interested. our two main girls are smart! reasonable! not played for a joke! did I love it in the end? eh! it was alright. i ended up being right about what was gonna happen. I liked the atmosphere, it builds good tension and had a relatively unique premise. kind of silly, kind of ridiculous. the exposition dump at he end was like a murder mystery novel reveal LMAO

A REAL PAIN (2024)

.. ..

this movie was okay! i like jesse eisenberg & kieren culkin individually, though comedy drama isn't usually my thing. i think it was a bit clunky and a bit too fast at times; it definitely does show that is a first time attempt at a screenplay, but overall i thought it was fine. definitely a background movie while i did other stuff, though.

EXCALIBUR (1981)

.. ..

LOOOOVE this movie. i enjoyed it as a kid despite not actually being much of a fantasy enjoyer, but i've been watching bbc merlin recently and i've been thinking about it, so, figured i'd give it a rewatch. holds up! i love the overly sparkly everything and i think merlin should be a morally grey feral loser in every iteration of the myth. best of all though, movie is free on internet archive right here!

THE ODYSSEY (1997)

.. ..

watched this with my friend who recently dragged me into EPIC!: THE MUSICAL. i do like the oddysey as a story! i read it when i was in high school and did indeed have a greek mythology phase, and currently i am re-reading the fagles translation (my favourite!). i love a good epic. somehow i had not seen this movie though, so we watched it together! it's alright. it's aged, obviously, and doesn't cover a lot of my favourite sections of the novel. i enjoyed it anyway though! if anything else, it was nice to have a prelude to the christopher nolan movie that's coming out next year. i really liked the way they did scylla and charybdis, i love a gooood fleshy creature full of teeth

ATTACK ON TITAN (2013 - 2023)

.. ..

i sat down and brought this one up to my friend some time last year asking if i should finish it because i started it when it was out when i was in high school, and she emphatically said yes absolutely i should watch it, so we watched it together! this was fucking brilliant, i loved everything about it. i'm really glad i saw it through in the end. i love a good narrative about survival, i love a found family, i love tragic childhood best friends and most of all, i love body horror and hack and slash gore. so this was great! made me laugh, made me incredibly sad, felt like shit after it was over and i will watch it again. the music fucks hard. the animation is incredible, s4 particularly was so so pretty. i loved this cast of characters, they are all so very nuanced and interesting and ultimately there was nothing i didn't like about any of the insane storylines in this story. will have to read the manga some day for sure

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2005 - 2008)

.. ..

crazy late to the party on this one, but i had a really long phase of being too old and cool for kids cartoons alright! i've been slowly breaking out of it and watched this with a friend who is a huge fan of the show. this was wonderful. it's reputation did not deceive me. what a wonderful story, a beautiful world, and some of the best characters i have ever enjoyed in television

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 (2024)

.. ..

i only watched the first two because i heard shadow was going to be in the 3rd one. that is my son and boy and i love him. i watched this with my friends and we all really enjoyed it! it was a wonderful silly and unserious fun movie and you can just see the love that went into animating these silly little guys. VERY FUN. definitely my fav out of the movies so far (though it was always going to be purely because keanu reeves shadow the hedgehog was designed for me personally to enjoy)

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016)

.. ..
REWATCH

already hit the yearly rewatch for this one i fear. i love being miserable and suffering

SUPER DARK TIMES (2017)

.. ..
REWATCH

i loooove this movie! its about two teenage best friends who get involved in an accident that tears their relationship apart. i love a good small town thriller, it's definitely a bit on the weird side but i love a movie thats kinda unserious but also kinda not.
