✸ PERSONAL FAVES & RECS

here is a bunch of stuff i love very dearly and enjoy imposing on my friends and everyone i ever meet!
links to watch/read/play/listen are provided where i can but many of these are external and may not exist anymore :(

✸ star trek (tos) (1966)

[ sci-fi ] [ adventure ]
space: the final fronteir....the original series is very dear to me! my first introduction into sci-fi as a kid, and a very permenant love in my life from then onwards

✸ twin peaks (1990)

[ mystery ] [ drama ]
after homecoming queen laura palmer is murdered, fbi agen dale cooper arrives in twin peaks, washington - a small suburban town where nothing is as it seems. my core inspiration for so many projects over the years!!

✸ the x-files (1993)

[ mystery ] [ sci-fi ]
fbi agents fox mulder, believer, and dana scully, skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained, while hidden forces work to impede their efforts. i have watched this series fifty times and i will watch it fifty more. my emotional support show from the 90s that went over what it's runtime should have been.

✸ jurassic park (1993)

[ sci-fi ] [ action / adventure ]
you know this one. it's the dinosaur movie

✸ the shawshank redemption (1994)

[ drama ]
a banker convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover gradually forms a friendship over a quarter century with a hardened convict, while maintaining his innocence and trying to remain hopeful through simple compassion. i love this movie, & i love the book just as much. one of my all time faves

✸ event horizon (1997)

[ sci-fi ] [ horror ]
a rescue crew is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that had been lost for seven years. one of THE cosmic horrors of all time, and an absolute top personal favourite of the genre for me!!

✸ cowboy bebop (1998)

[ anime ] [ space western ]
a space western about the lives of a ragtag group of bounty hunters as they chase down the galaxy's most wanted criminals. ohhh i could write essays about how much i love cowboy bebop; it's themes, it's meanings and it's characters. this is my All Time Favourite media, including the movie that came out in 2001! hm? what was that? the 2021 live action series?? no no, never heard of it, i dont think that exists at all

✸ trigun (1998)

[ anime ] [ space western ]
a space western about an infamous outlaw with a huge price on his head and the ragtag group of......hold on a minute, this one sounds familiar. hm? what was that? the 2023 reboot series?? HOHOHO, SCROLL DOWN TO THE 2020'S SECTION MY FRIEND

✸ the green mile (1990)

[ crime ] [ drama ]
if i had a nickel for every stephen king jail novel movie adaptation on this list....
a beautiful story set on death row, where a prisoner possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments awaits his death date, and the guard's attempt to help stave off the condemned man's execution.

✸ firefly (2001)

[ space western ] [ adventure ]
ok so picture this: a space western about a ragtag crew of a spaceship...
yes, this only ran for one season and promptly got cancelled, but fear not! they finished it off with a movie (SERENITY (2005)), and there's a whole series of novels that just read like regular episodes!

✸ saw (2004)

[ horror ]
this. this is, unfortunately, my favourite franchise of all time. i'm talking, i can give you the direct timeline in this insane poorly cobbled together plot. i know the lore. i've watched it a thousand times, and i'll watch it a thousand more. this is a positively ridiculous franchise that i got into when i was stumbling my way through edgy horror movies at 12 or 13yo, and i love it very dearly to this day.

✸ star trek (aos) (2009)

[ sci-fi ] [ action ]
i do adore this alternate original timeline in all it's blinding lense flare glory, and the following movies in the same universe. the cast were wonderful, the movies were silly and fun, and i really do enjoy them still!!

✸ gravity falls (2012)

[ animation ] [ adventure ]
i was introduced to gravity falls wayyyy after it's time, because i was adamant i wouldn't like it. jokes on me!!!! this is a beautiful little show that is so much more than i expected it to be, and it has very quickly wormed it's way into my heart after watching it.

✸ pacific rim (2013)

[ sci-fi ] [ action ]
one of the best movies of all time, imo. in a world ravaged by kaijus, humanity's defence is BIG ROBOTS THAT FUCKING PUNCH THE KAIJUS TO DEATH!!! despite being the greatest premise i've ever seen, this movie is special to me in a lot of ways - the indomitable human spirit, and having a connection with someone so deeply that you are drift compatible is something i love so very much

✸ as above, so below (2014)

[ horror ] [ found footage ]
a fantastic little found footage horror film about a journalist and her small team investigating deep within the paris catacombs. found footage is such a hit or miss genre, which is why i love finding good ones so much. this movie has it all: shaky camera footage, competant protagonists, a really enjoyable plot and some cool visual effects! great movie

✸ manchester by the sea (2016)

[ drama ]
this is my go to movie when i'm feeling miserable and want to feel worse <3 it is about a very sad depressed man who has to take care of his nephew after his dad suddenly dies. i fucking love this movie

✸ the void (2016)

[ cosmic horror ]
a criminally underappreciated cosmic horror about a handful of residents stuck withhin an understaffed hospital as cultists loom outside. this movie has it all for me: slasher gore, occult themes, incredible vibes. i love this movie so so much

✸ the endless (2017)

[ horror ] [ sci-fi ]
another criminally underrated movie about two brothers who escape a UFO cult as children, and decide to return to seek answers and closure as adults. this movie is so pretty, i adore the cinematography and i really enjoy the somewhat unique premise! great film, i love any good sibling relationship movie

✸ chainmail chasers (2022)

[ horror ] [ youtube ]
a horror webseries following a user exploring and documenting the origins of famous creepypasta images. loads of fun, wonderful art and production value. if you were into iconic creepypastas as a kid, like slenderman and smiledog.avi, you'll enjoy this one!! watch it on youtube!

✸ nope (2022)

[ horror ] [ sci-fi ]
i love, LOVE this movie. i went into the cinemas to see it blind, knowing that I really enjoyed the last few jordan peele movies i'd seen. very very quickly has become one of my all time favourite movies! i adore the themes and the cinematography, and have already rewatched it so many times.

✸ trigun: stampede (2023)

[ space western ] [ anime ]
ONE MUST IMAGINE A SPACE WESTERN WITH A RAGTAG GROUP OF BOUNTY HUNTERS.....
this is a reboot of trigun (1998), which i believe follows the manga a little closer! it hadn't finished by the time tri98's finale aired, so it's ending was a little ehh, whatever. this show was soo, so much fun - i loved every aspect of it just as much as i love tri98. as of aug 24, s1 of tristamp is out, and a s2 is on the way!

✸ to the moon (2011)

[ adventure ] [ rpgmaker ]
two doctors traversing backwards through a dying man's memories to artificially fulfill his last wish. do you want to cry every time you think about a lighthouse for the next decade? play this game and it's sequels. beautiful narrative, no misses in this series.

✸ fallout 4 (2015)

[ post-apocalyptic ] [ adventure ] [ rpg ]

controversial take, but this is my favourite in the series. its good when you dont have a fonv fan in your ear telling you it's bad!! nick valentine is the love of my life!!

✸ disco elysium (2019)

[ rpg ] [ incredibly difficult to categorize this one, to be honest ]
an amnesiac detective uses a unique set of skills to solve a murder and restore his identity. this game is the most beautiful, visually stunning, story rich, emotionally devastating game i have ever played in my life. i love it so, so much - and i have a whole page dedicated to it!

✸ omori (2020)

[ horror ] [ adventure ]
explore a strange world full of colorful friends and foes. When the time comes, the path you've chosen will determine your fate... and perhaps the fate of others as well. i love this game dearly, you must play this blind. i have not stopped thinking about it since the day i played it. beautiful art, amazing soundtrack, absolutely amazing story. lowkey inspo for the site layout too!

✸ faith: the unholy trinity (2022)

[ horror ]
WHAT I AM ABOUT TO DO HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED BY THE VATICAN. an 8-bit horror game inspired by the satanic panic, about a young priest and his struggle against demons, insane cultists, and his own weakening faith. absolutely delightful little game, especially if you love occult horror!

✸ long gone days (2023)

[ rpg ]
a stunning little rpg about the human cost of war, following a man born and raised in a private military company as he discovers the truth behind his orders. this is a game i had been following through early access in 2018, right up to it's release in 2023! i love the art of this game so much, and it's story and themes are absolutely wonderful.

✸ rita hayworth & shawshank redemption - stephen king (1982)

[ crime fiction ]
much like the movie, this novel is a story of hope & friendship, and follows a banker's life in prison as he maintains his innocence and plans a great escape. bought this novel right after i watched the movie with my dad for the first time, and both became instant favourites!

✸ pet semetary - stephen king (1983)

[ horror ]
ahhh, my first ever stephen king novel. i had to buy this from a secondhand store behind my mother's back when i was like 11, because she didn't think i was old enough for stephen king yet, and it is still to date my favourite book of all time. i've read it a thousand times, i think. this is a novel about a family that moves to a small town, and discovers an ancient burial ground hidden deep in the woods behind their new home

✸ good omens - terry pratchett & neil gaiman (1990)

[ comedy ] [ fantasy ]
following the birth of the antichrist, a demon and an angel who have come to enjoy their comfortable life on earth try to prevent armageddon. absolutely incredible book, coming as no surprise from a collab between these two authors. one of my all time favourite books! - my copy is so tattered, it's almost unreadable nowdays. it's also been adapted into a really fun radio drama, and a tv show! none of em beat the book, though

✸ the secret history - donna tartt (1992)

[ dark academia ] [ drama ]
this novel follows the retrospective story of six close-knit, socially isolated students, and their lives before, leading up to, and after one of their friends is murdered. THE dark academia. this is a big and slow paced book, but a fantastic one all the same. if you ever get the chance, i truly recommend you listen to this one as an audiobook on audible, where donna tartt narrates it herself!

✸ the green mile - stephen king (1996)

[ drama ] [ dark fantasy ]
just as with the movie, i love and have reread this book many times! the green mile follows the story of a death row supervisor's encounter with an unusual inmate who displays inexplicable healing and empathetic abilities. movie and book are of the same quality, imo!

✸ house of leaves - mark z. danielewski (2000)

[ horror ] [ ergodic ]
this is my favourite book of all time, and i literally can barely even explain it to you simply. this is a story about a man writing about a book, which is about a movie that does not exist. this is a complex and bizarre read about a quaint little family home that's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. i definitely recommend getting a physical copy of this book, as it requires a lot of...rotating around

✸ skulduggery pleasant - derek landy (2007)

[ modern fantasy ]
an incredible borderline YA modern fantasy series about a skeleton detective and his trainee as she learns about magic, how to do it, and the extensive world surrounding it. this was my favourite series as a kid - it's a little dark, it's funny and witty, it shaped so much of my humour and personality, and i still enjoy picking it up and reading it today.

✸ a redtail's dream (2011)

[ mythology ] [ adventure ]
an absolutely visually STUNNING webcomic about a young man and his shapeshifting dog on an involuntary journey on the other side of the Bird's Path in the realm of dreams. this is a beautiful webcomic in all senses - art, story, characters. AUGH. please read this. this webcomic is complete, and can be read on the official site here!

✸ transformers: more than meets the eye (2012)

[ sci-fi ] [ adventure ]
one half of a dual series running at the same time, MTMTE follows rodimus and the ship of autobots he takes on a quest to find the knights of cybertron. this ran alongside it's sister series (robots in disguise), but i never really got into that one. MTMTE has a huge cast, and stunning artwork - it's funny, the story is wonderful, the writing is amazing and i love that all the characters get a lot of story and screentime!
you can read it online here! definitely use an adblocker, though

✸ s. - doug dorst, jj abrams (2013)

[ mystery ] [ ergodic ]
this is less of a book and more of an experience - s. is composed of the novel Ship of Theseus (by a fictional author), hand-written notes filling the book's margins as a dialogue between two college students hoping to uncover the author's mysterious identity and the novel's secret, plus loose supplementary materials tucked in between pages. this novel is so much fun!! i cannot recommend it enough if you're a fan of ergodic literature. im all for pirating, but this is for sure a book you should read physically!

✸ wilde life (2014)

[ slice of life ] [ mystery ]
a webcomic about a man and his supernatural adventures in a sleepy little town! currently ongoing as of writing this. wonderful comic, i have been reading it for many many years now!
read it on the official site here!

✸ transformers: lost light (2016)

[ sci-fi ] [ adventure ]
the sequel to IDW's MTMTE series and the finale of the lost light crew's journey! beautiful send off to the crew, and absolutely stunning art style, beautiful wrtiting, and amazing story. quality retains from the first lot of comics!
read it online here! recommend an adblocker though
