DUNGEON MESHI was so much fun!!! i'm typically not really a fantasy person, but the overall concept of the dungeon being like playing a dnd game really interested me. i like the idea of no permadeath in the dungeon! i binged this with my friend who had watched it as it was airing, and i really loved it! it's so charming and fun, very silly with some suddenly insane lore drops and then back to being silly again, very pretty visually as well. i love how in depth the worldbuilding goes, how much thought has been put into these otherwise well-known and generic monsters and their biology, and exactly how they would be edible. i think we finished this in about two days, and i immediately went to start reading the manga because it's all available online! i'm only a little ways into it as of writing this, but so far it's pretty much line for line to the show, which is so good.

i'm going to preface this with the fact that i really did not care for this movie, like. i did not like it at all. i'm not a horror movie snob, truly. it is my favourite genre. i have some standards and expectations from horror, but i honestly, legitimately, have some of the most horrendous movie taste of all time, particularly when it comes to horror. i watched this movie in theaters with some friends to kill some time before we went out, since it had been on my radar after i heard people on twitter were saying it was good. unfortunately, it was not, and i am going to dunk on this movie for two paragraphs. sorry! this was one of those horror movies where people were 'screaming, crying, throwing up, passing out' in early previews, which is an absolutely staple sign of the most mediocre movie you'll ever see in your life, which LONGLEGS truly was!
this was so silly, like genuinely such a silly ridiculous movie. satanic worshipper is such an easy setup to take in so many incredible directions - i usually really love occult horror, so i was pretty keen on watching this! i'm really sad it sucked, actually. there are a lot of ideas here in this story, but most of them barely get touched beyond initial setup, and then it's onto the next one. we had zodiac killer style coded messages, we had the occult, we had supernatural happenings in an otherwise unassuming setting. the problem with this movie, i think, is that there were too many ideas and they didn't even manage to tie everything back in at the end either. loads of loose ends! did you know the main character is a psychic fbi agent? this plays absolutely no relevance to the plot beyond her just Psychically Knowing that the murderer's house is one in a thousand other identical houses, and this happens like 4min into the movie. this comes back to be mentioned in passing, but is literally never used again. another stupid plothole was that the longlegs character was gifting possessed satan dolls to little girls, and the satan doll would posess the fathers, and the fathers would kill the children (plot beat i guessed about 20min into this 2hr film and yet it was still revealed like this was a wild crazy thing to be happening), but then it's revealed that our beloved psychic fbi agent main character was going to be his next vitcim! oh no! however, she does not have a father figure in this film so - what? longlegs was going to just beat the fuck out of her? what?? so he's just a guy who kills now? what is this plotline!!!! what was the snake imagery all about when there were no snakes in the film? what was up with the weird scene where there was a whole discussion about how the main character was born via c-section and her mother resented her for it? this was a 4 second offhand mention and then NOTHING CAME OF THAT EITHER! WHAT WAS THIS MOVIE????
i usually like a weirdly complex movie that makes you think, but LONGLEGS just was not that! i should have known it was going to be shit when someone told me "even if you don't like it, it's worth seeing for the cinematography!" like. girl, no it was not. the cinematography was genuinely nothing overly special imo. and dont even get me fuckin started on longlegs himself dude, oh my god. his legs weren't even that long. the name was never explained. they should have made this a weird little creature movie, given the amount of prosthetics they threw on nicholas cage to make the most botox ass looking unscary serial killer i have ever seen in my life. ridiculous movie. i really did squint long and hard for something i missed in this movie, some underlying narrative i didnt pick up on or some wild reveal at the end but uh. yeah, no, never got one. i really want to give it the benefit of the doubt and say maybe i just didn't understand it, but there wasn't much to understand!! like really, this is just a slightly not good serial killer movie.
actually good occult movies i would watch instead of watching LONGLEGS are: INCANTATION (2022), THE VVITCH (2015), SUSPIRA (1977), THE VOID (2016), and THE WICKER MAN (1973)

i have been so unbelievably excited for this movie since i saw the initial posters for it, because if there's one thing about me - like one thing at all - it's that i absolutely LOVE found footage. always have done, always will do. it's such a shitty garbage genre that's so innundated with some of the worst, cheap horror i have ever seen in my life, so finding a good found footage feels so goddamn good. one of my favourite movies of all time is AS ABOVE, SO BELOW (2014) and GHOSTWATCH (1992). the reason i was so interested in LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL was specifically because the premise and vibes immediately reminded me of GHOSTWATCH, just set in the 70s. if you're reading this because you're like, "oh yeah, LNWTD was a good movie and i want to hear this neocities user ramble nonsensically about it for three paragraphs" then i positively beg of you: go and watch GHOSTWATCH. you're gonna love it.
this movie did not disappoint me! there were some moments when a 'cut to break' graphic was so obviously garbage ai slop which made me a little ehhhgg about the whole thing - it was cheap and they look like shit, they're not even good graphics - but the rest of the movie pulled me back in. also i pirated it anyway lmfao regardless. i am not immune to a demon posession story, i fear! it felt very GHOSTWATCH meets THE CONJURING (2013), another favourite horror franchise of mine. the premise was fun, the build up and energy was so fun, and the last 15min or so were so fascinating to me - there were some amazing effects towards the end of the show, and i do truly love how they did the ending, even though i am usually a firm believer of found footage ending as soon as the footage cuts. we love a loose ending here on radiolights dot com, i would rather a hard cut to black than an awkward 10min wrap up where they have to violently explain all their loose ends before time ends.
all in all, i thoroughly enjoyed this one and would certainly watch it again with friends. movies that i personally would recommend if you liked this one are the previously mentioned AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, GHOSTWATCH, and also HELL HOUSE LLC (2015) (but not its fucking god awful sequel, holy shit).
